Agricultural pest mites are recognized as one of the difficult-to-control biological groups in the world. Among them, the more common mite pests are mainly spider mites and gall mites, which have a strong destructive ability to economic crops such as fruit trees, vegetables, and flowers. The number and sales of agricultural acaricides used to control herbivorous mites are second only to Lepidoptera and Homoptera among agricultural insecticides and acaricides. However, in recent years, due to the frequent use of acaricides and improper use of artificial The reason is that different degrees of resistance have been shown, and it is imminent to develop new high-efficiency acaricides with novel structures and unique mechanisms of action.
This article will introduce to you a new type of benzoylacetonitrile acaricide – fenflunomide. The product was developed by Japan’s Otsuka Chemical Co., Ltd. and was launched for the first time in 2017. It is mainly used for the control of pest mites on crops such as fruit trees, vegetables and tea trees, especially for pest mites that have developed resistance.
Basic nature
English common name: Cyflumetofen; CAS No.: 400882-07-7; Molecular formula: C24H24F3NO4; Molecular weight: 447.4; Chemical name: 2-methoxyethyl-(R,S)-2-(4-tert. Butylphenyl)-2-cyano-3-oxo-3-(α,α,α-trifluoro-o-tolyl); the structural formula is as shown below.
Butflufenafen is a stomach-killing acaricide with no systemic properties, and its main mechanism of action is to inhibit the mitochondrial respiration of mites. Through de-esterification in vivo, a hydroxyl structure is formed, which interferes and inhibits mitochondrial protein complex II, hinders electron (hydrogen) transfer, destroys phosphorylation reaction, and causes paralysis and death of mites.
The action characteristics of cyflumetofen
(1) High activity and low dosage. Only a dozen grams per mu of land is used, low-carbon, safe and environmentally friendly;
(2) Broad spectrum. Effective against all types of pest mites;
(3) Highly selective. Only has a specific killing effect on harmful mites, and has little negative impact on non-target organisms and predatory mites;
(4) Comprehensiveness. It can be used for outdoor and protected horticultural crops to control mites in various growth stages of eggs, larvae, nymphs and adults, and can be used in conjunction with biological control technology;
(5) Both quick and lasting effects. Within 4 hours, the harmful mites will stop feeding, and the mites will be paralyzed within 12 hours, and the quick effect is good; and it has a long lasting effect, and one application can control a long period of time;
(6) It is not easy to develop drug resistance. It has a unique mechanism of action, no cross-resistance with existing acaricides, and it is not easy for mites to develop resistance to it;
(7) It is rapidly metabolized and decomposed in soil and water, which is safe for crops and non-target organisms such as mammals and aquatic organisms, beneficial organisms, and natural enemies. It is a good resistance management tool.
Global Markets and Registrations
In 2007, fenflufen was first registered and marketed in Japan. Now bufenflunom has been registered and sold in Japan, Brazil, the United States, China, South Korea, the European Union and other countries. The sales are mainly in Brazil, the United States, Japan, etc., accounting for about 70% of the global sales; the main use is the control of mites on fruit trees such as citrus and apples, accounting for more than 80% of the global sales.
EU: Listed in EU Annex 1 in 2010 and officially registered in 2013, valid until 31 May 2023.
United States: Officially registered with the EPA in 2014, and approved by California in 2015. For tree nets (crop categories 14-12), pears (crop categories 11-10), citrus (crop categories 10-10), grapes, strawberries, tomatoes and landscape crops.
Canada: Approved for registration by Health Canada’s Pest Management Agency (PMRA) in 2014.
Brazil: Ratified in 2013. According to the website query, up to now, it is mainly a single dose of 200g/L SC, which is mainly used for citrus to control purple short-bearded mites, apples to control apple spider mites, and coffee to control purple-red short-bearded mites, small claw mites, etc.
China: According to the China Pesticide Information Network, there are two registrations of fenflufenac in China. One is a single dose of 200g/L SC, which is held by FMC. mites. The other is the technical registration held by Japan Ouite Agricultural Technology Co., Ltd.
Australia: In December 2021, the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Administration (APVMA) announced the approval and registration of 200 g/L buflufenacil suspension from December 14, 2021 to January 11, 2022. It can be used to control a variety of mites in pome, almond, citrus, grape, fruit and vegetable, strawberry and ornamental plants, and can also be used for protective applications in strawberries, tomatoes and ornamental plants.
