Bill No. 32 of the Ministry of Plant Protection and Agricultural Inputs of the Secretariat for The Defence of Agriculture of Brazil, published in the Official Gazette on 23 July 2021, lists 51 pesticide formulations (products that can be used by farmers). Seventeen of these preparations were low-impact products or bio-based products.
Of the registered products, five contain active ingredients that have reached Brazil for the first time, three contain active ingredients of biological origin that can be used in organic agriculture and two contain active ingredients of chemical origin.
Three new biological products (Neoseiulus barkeri, S. chinensis, and N. montane) are registered under the Reference Specification (RE) and can be used in any crop system.
Neoseiulus barkeri is the first product registered in Brazil for the control of Raoiella indica, a major pest of coconut trees. The same product based on the ER 45 registration can also be recommended for white mite control.
Bruno Breitenbach, general coordinator of pesticides and related products, explained: “Although we have chemical products to control white mites to choose from, this is the first biological product to control this pest.”
The parasitic wasp Hua Glazed Wasp became the first biological product based on ER 44 registration. Before that, growers had only one chemical that could be used to control the Liriomyza sativae (Liriomyza sativae).
Based on No. 46 Reference Regulations, the registered biological control product Neoseiia mountain mites is recommended for the control of Tetranychus urticae (Tetranychus urticae). Although there are other biological products that can also control this pest, this product is a less impactful alternative.
A newly registered chemical active ingredient is cyclobromoximamide for the control of Helicoverpa armigera caterpillars in cotton, corn and soybean crops. The product is also used to control Leucoptera coffeella in coffee crops and Neoleucinodes elegantalis and Tuta Absolute in tomato crops.
Another newly registered chemical active ingredient is the fungicide isofetamid, used to control Sclerotinia sclerotiorum in soybean, bean, potato, tomato and lettuce crops. The product is also recommended for the control of Botrytis cinerea in Onions and grapes and Venturia inaequalis in apple crops.
Other products use active ingredients that have been registered in China. The registration of generic pesticides is very important to reduce market concentration and promote competition, which will bring fairer trade opportunities and lower production costs to Brazilian agriculture.
All registered products are analyzed and approved by the departments responsible for health, environment and agriculture in accordance with scientific standards and best international practices.
