Paws and Profits: Recent Business and Education Appointments

        Veterinary business leaders play a vital role in ensuring organizational success by promoting cutting-edge technology and innovation while maintaining high quality animal care. In addition, veterinary school leaders play a critical role in shaping the future of the profession by training and inspiring the next generation of veterinarians. They lead curriculum development, research programs, and expert mentoring efforts to prepare students for the evolving field of veterinary medicine. Together, these leaders drive progress, promote best practices and uphold the integrity of the veterinary profession.
        Various veterinary businesses, organizations and schools have recently announced new promotions and appointments. Those who have achieved career advancement include the following:
        Elanco Animal Health Incorporated has expanded its board of directors to 14 members, with the latest additions being Kathy Turner and Craig Wallace. Both directors also serve on Elanco’s finance, strategy and oversight committees.
        Turner holds key leadership positions at IDEXX Laboratories, including Chief Marketing Officer. Wallace has held leadership positions for over 30 years with prominent companies such as Fort Dodge Animal Health, Trupanion and Ceva. 1
        “We are pleased to welcome Kathy and Craig, two outstanding animal health industry leaders, to the Elanco Board of Directors,” said Jeff Simmons, president and CEO of Elanco Animal Health, in a company press release. We continue to make significant progress. We believe that Casey and Craig will be valuable additions to the Board of Directors in executing our innovation, product portfolio and performance strategies.”

        Jonathan Levine, DVM, DACVIM (neurology), is currently Professor of Veterinary Neurology and Director of Small Animal Clinical Research at Texas A&M University, but has been elected to the University of Wisconsin (UW)-Madison. The next dean of the college will be the dean. of the College of Veterinary Medicine, effective August 1, 2024. This appointment will make UW-Madison Levin the College of Veterinary Medicine’s fourth dean, 41 years after its founding in 1983.
        Levin will succeed Mark Markel, MD, PhD, DACVS, who will serve as interim dean after Markel served as dean for 12 years. Markel will retire but will continue to direct the comparative orthopedic research laboratory focused on musculoskeletal regeneration. 2
        “I am excited and proud to step into my new role as dean,” Levine said in a UW News 2 article. “I am passionate about working to solve problems and expand opportunities while meeting the diverse needs of the school and its community. I look forward to building on Dean Markle’s outstanding achievements and helping the school’s talented faculty, staff and students continue to make a positive impact.”
        Levine’s current research focuses on neurological diseases that occur naturally in dogs, especially those associated with spinal cord injuries and central nervous system tumors in humans. He also previously served as president of the American Veterinary Medical Association.
        “Leaders who are successful project developers must develop a collaborative, inclusive culture that emphasizes shared governance. To create this culture, I encourage feedback, open dialogue, transparency in problem solving, and shared leadership,” Levine added. 2
        Animal health company Zoetis Inc has appointed Gavin D.K. Hattersley as a member of its board of directors. Hattersley, currently president, CEO and director of Molson Coors Beverage Company, brings decades of global public company leadership and board experience to Zoetis.
        “Gavin Hattersley brings valuable experience to our board of directors as we continue to expand in key markets around the world,” Zoetis CEO Christine Peck said in a company press release 3. “His experience as CEO of a public company will help Zoetis continue to move forward . Our vision is to become the most trusted and valuable company in animal healthcare, shaping the future of animal care through our innovative, customer-focused and dedicated colleagues.”
        Hattersley’s new position brings Zoetis’ board of directors to 13 members. “I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to join the Zoetis Board of Directors at a significant time for the company. Zoetis’ mission to lead the industry through best-in-class pet care solutions, a diverse product portfolio and a successful company culture is aligned With my professional experience perfectly aligned with my personal values, I look forward to playing a role in Zoetis’ bright future ” said Hattersley. 
        In the newly created position, Timo Prange, DVM, MS, DACVS (Los Angeles), becomes executive veterinary director of the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. Prange’s responsibilities include improving the efficiency of the NC State Veterinary Hospital to increase caseloads and improve the clinical experience for patients and staff.
        “In this position, Dr. Prange will assist with interaction and communication with clinical services and will also work closely with the faculty fellowship program that focuses on mentorship and wellness,” said Kate Moers, DVM, DACVIM (Cardiology), MD, DVM , DACVIM (Cardiology), Dean, NC State College,” the Department of Veterinary Medicine said in a press release. 4 “We are taking steps to make interactions with hospitals smoother so we can increase patient load.”
        Prange, currently an assistant professor of equine surgery at NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine, will continue to see equine surgery patients and conduct research on treating cancer and promoting equine health, according to NC State. The school’s teaching hospital serves approximately 30,000 patients annually, and this new position will help measure its success in treating each patient and ensuring customer satisfaction.
        “I’m excited about the opportunity to help the entire hospital community grow together as a team and truly see our values ​​reflected in our everyday work culture. It will be work, but it will also be interesting. I really enjoy working with other people to solve problems.
