Growth Regulators: On this episode of TreeNewal’s Building Roots podcast, host Wes joins ArborJet’s Emmettunich to discuss the interesting topic of growth regulators, with a focus on paclobutrazol. Emmett explains how growth regulators work and their role in plant care. Unlike other plant health treatments that affect the tree’s external environment, paclobutrazol works from the inside, changing the tree’s physiology. This compound inhibits the growth hormone gibberellic acid, reducing cell elongation and internode growth while maintaining the same number of leaves. This results in more compact growth with smaller, darker, denser green leaves.
The benefits of paclobutrazol are manifold. These range from reducing pruning trips for line clearing and shrub maintenance companies to improving tree health, combating drought and reducing stress. It can even be used for safety purposes and to control tree growth in confined spaces.
This application is usually achieved by soil drenching or injection, and care must be taken to avoid over-conditioning and potential impact on nearby plants. The effectiveness of paclobutrazol varies depending on the tree species, with red oak and live oak responding particularly well. The timing of application is important because if applied in the fall, winter or early spring, growth will be slowed the following spring, whereas a summer application will be effective the following spring. Emmett stresses the importance of accurate dosing and encourages arborists and homeowners to seek expert advice.
Overall, paclobutrazol is a versatile and underutilized tool in the plant health toolbox. This provides many benefits for tree care and improving the overall health and appearance of the tree.
